Chapter 1 - Resources Notes

1. Anything that can be used to satisfy a need is known as a resource. 

2. Utility is what makes an object or a substance a resource.

3. Value means worth. Some resources have economic value, while some don't.

4. Patent means the exclusive right over an idea or invention. 

5. Technology is the application of latest knowledge and skill in doing or making things. 

6. Time and technology are 2 important factors that can change a substance into resource. 

7. There are 3 types of resources
• Natural Resources
• Human made Resources
• Human Resources

8. Natural resources - The resources that are drawn from the nature without much modification are called Natural resources. Example: Air, Water, Soil etc

On basis of stock
• Renewable resources - Those which get renewed or replenished quickly. Example: Solar energy, Soil, Forest

Some of these are unlimited and are not affected by human activities such as solar or wind energy while careless use of certain renewable resources like water, soil, and forest can affect their stock. 

• Non-renewable resources - Those which have a limited stock. Example: Coal, Petroleum etc

Once the stocks are exhausted it may take thousands of years to be renewed or replenished.

9. Human made resources - Natural substance become resources only when their original form has changed. Example: Iron ore was not a resource until people learnt to extract iron from it. Technology is also a human made resource.

10. Human resources - People use the nature in the best possible ways by using their knowledge, skill, technology. Therefore, they are considered as Human resource.

Education and health help in making people a valuable resources. Improving the quality of people's skill so that they are able to create more resources is known as human resource development.

11. Conservation of resources
• Conservation of resources refers to using natural resources carefully so that they could be renewed and continued to be used in future.
• Sustainable use of resource refers to carefully utilising resources and balancing the need to use resources and also conserve them for future generation.
• It is our duty to ensure that all uses of renewable resources are sustainable.
• The diversity of life on the Earth should be conserved.
• The damage to natural environmental system should be minimised.

12. Principles of Sustainable Development
• Respect and care for all forms of life
• Improve the quality of human life.
• Conserve the Earth's vitality and diversity.
• Minimise the depletion of natural resources.
• Change personal attitude and practices towards the environment
• Enable communities to care for their own communities
