Format of an Informal Letter

An informal letter adds a personal touch to one's thoughts and ideas. It is used when you write a chatty or newsy letter to a friend or relative. The tone is friendly and full of feelings. Therefore, these letters are also called social letters.
An informal letter is a letter written to your friends or family members

• The sender's address (writer's address) is written at the top, left-hand corner of the letter

• The date is written below the sender's address on the left-hand corner of the letter.

• Salutation - Since informal letters are addressed to our friends and family, we can use 'Dear' as a salutation along with the name of the person. For e.g., Dear Mummy /Dear Rajesh,

• Add the comma after the salutation.

• Body of the letter, usually, consists of three paragraphs: Introduction, Body, and Conclusion.
→ Introduction - State the reason for writing.
→ Body - Expand that is mentioned in the first paragraph.
→ Conclusion - Make some final remarks.

• Complimentary close: An informal letter should end on an affectionate note such as yours lovingly, yours truly, or yours affectionately.

In an informal letter, you have the freedom to close the letter the way you want (depending on the extent of your relationship with the receiver). Normally, you can choose from any of the following complimentary closes:

→ Best,
→ Kindly,
→ Kind regards,
→ Best regards,
→ Lots of love,
→ Love,
→ Yours lovingly,
• Don't forget to add the comma after the complimentary close.

Example: You are Aakriti/ Abhinav. Write a letter to your friend describing your boarding school in about 120-150 words.

Dear Muskan,

How have you been? I hope my letter finds you in best of health and spirits. It has been almost a month I transferred to the boarding school. I am very happy in my new school. The classes and dormitories are very spacious. There are well equipped science laboratories and a library with a great collection of books. The school has amazing sports facilities such as swimming pool, horse riding track and archery range.

I believe my life here will be interesting and enjoyable. Although I have made many new friends, I still miss you and the other friends. Please, convey my regards to your parents.
