Unit 3: Purpose
Question 1: Define the term sustainable development.Answer: Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs.
Question 2: List 17 sustainable development goals.
Answer: The 17 sustainable development goals are
• Goal 1: No Poverty
• Goal 2: Zero Hunger
• Goal 3: Good Health and Well Being
• Goal 4: Quality Education
• Goal 5: Gender Equality
• Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
• Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
• Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
• Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
• Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities
• Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
• Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
• Goal 13: Climate Action
• Goal 14: Life Below Water
• Goal 15: Life On Land
• Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
• Goal 17: Partnership For The Goals
Question 3: Explain the term Sustainable Development Goals.
Answer: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 goal that the nations of the world adopted at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. The SDGs were adopted to meet the urgent challenges of the world covering three dimensions - Environmental, Social, and Economical.
Question 4: Explain the four phases of development of AI.
Answer:
• First Wave and Second Wave
The development of the Internet is regarded as the first wave. Internet is the backbone of AI technology in the sense that it allows for generation, collection, and use of data at an unprecedented rate. Data is one of the domains of AI.
Development of mobile Internet is regarded as the second wave. This development shifted the focus towards real time data across the world. Access to unprecedented generation, collection and usage of real time data changed the manner in which the AI systems work and operate.
• Third Wave
We are living in the era of third wave. In this wave, real and digital are merging through the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT).
IoT is a concept in which everything in the world is connected through appliances and sensors. For example, refrigerators, air conditioners, cars, mobile phones, TV sets electricity meters, etc.
• Fourth Wave
It is merely a prediction about the future. In this wave, the developments in the field of artificial intelligence will help in creating more life, like robots and Al systems. It means that Al systems and the robots will be able to do what human beings are doing today.
Question 5: Explain any two smart products that lead to contribute you towards the achievement of SDGs.
Answer:
• “Smart water management” systems are already working to help in the attainment of this goal. In some areas, they have helped in reducing water consumption by as much as 15%. These intelligent systems use one or more of the following components: smart pipes, soil sensors, smart irrigations management, smart rain water harvesting, smart water meters, smart water flow control software, etc.
• Al technologies like smart farm management, smart irrigation, precision agriculture, etc are helping in boosting farm productivity and reducing wastage.
Question 6: List any three SDGs interlinked with the achievement of no poverty.
Answer: Social issues are not simple. They are complex and interlinked. Example: Ending poverty. Nations of the world have accepted this as the greatest global challenge restricting sustainable development and as such made it a Goal 1. But almost all the other SDGs are linked to it. For example, without addressing poverty we cannot address the issue of Hunger (Goal 2) or Good Health and Well Being (Goal 3), Absence of Quality Education (Goal 4) increases poverty and poverty makes it difficult to attain quality education.
Question 7: Explain the two factors that restrict the adaptation of AI.
Answer:
• Problems with data availability and accessibility: Data is one of the three primary domains of technologies, and this data is not freely available and accessible. Further, the collection and retention of Al data raise privacy and ethical concerns.
• Chronic shortage of talent is able to improve the Al capabilities, improve models, and implement solutions: Al technologies are the latest development. This means that there is a shortage of manpower to develop these systems.

ReplyDeleteIs it impossible to achieve Sustainable Development Goals without global partnership and cooperation. Discuss
ReplyDeleteThe Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 goals adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 to be achieved by 2030. The goals are interconnected and aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.
DeleteSDG 17 is about revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development. The 2030 Agenda is universal and calls for action by all countries – developed and developing – to ensure no one is left behind. It requires partnerships between governments, the private sector, and civil society. The SDGs can only be realized with a strong commitment to global partnership and cooperation to ensure no one is left behind in our journey to development.
The SDGs are ambitious and require a collective effort from all stakeholders to achieve them. The goals are interdependent, and progress in one area can have a positive impact on others. For example, achieving SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy) can contribute to achieving SDG 13 (climate action) and SDG 3 (good health and well-being).
Global partnership and cooperation are essential for achieving the SDGs. Developing countries are grappling with an unprecedented rise in external debt levels following the COVID-19 pandemic, compounded by challenges such as record inflation, escalating interest rates, competing priorities, and constrained fiscal capacity, underscoring the urgent need for debt relief and financial assistance. While official development assistance (ODA) flows continue to reach record peaks, the increase in 2022 is primarily attributed to spending on refugees in donor countries and aid to Ukraine. To be successful, everyone will need to mobilize both existing and additional resources, and developed countries will need to fulfill their official development assistance commitments.
In conclusion, achieving the SDGs is a collective responsibility that requires a strong commitment to global partnership and cooperation. The goals are interconnected and require a collective effort from all stakeholders to achieve them. The SDGs can only be realized with a strong commitment to global partnership and cooperation to ensure no one is left behind in our journey to development.
