Writer of the story - Satyajit RayQuestion and Answers
Question 1: “After all he’s already had one shock and…” Who received the shock? What was it? What was the speaker suggesting?
Answer: Rajen Babu received a shock. A day ago Rajen Babu has received a threatening letter by post. This shocked him greatly. The speaker, Tinkori Babu was suggesting that Rajen Babu should not be told about his son’s recent arrival in Darjeeling as it would give him another shock.
Question 2: Why do you think Tinkori Babu actually came to Darjeeling? In what way did the purpose of his visit change?
Answer: Tinkori Babu actually came to Darjeeling to stay there for some days enjoying the natural beauty of the place. In Rajen Babu’s house he took shelter as a paying guest. During his stay, Tinkori Babu saw Rajen Babu’s childhood photograph and recognized as the boy who did the harm to him in his childhood. Then Tinkori Babu thought of doing something that would cause Rajen Babu a great deal of anxiety and trouble. In this way the purpose of his visit changed.
Question 3: “I can’t tell you…how I spent the night.” Who said these words? What had happened to frighten him so?
Answer: Rajen Babu said these words. Last night, especially after midnight a terrible incident had happened that made Rajen Babu frightened. In midnight he woke up suddenly and found a dangerous masked face bent over him. This fearful incident panicked him a lot.
Question 4: Why was everyone surprised to find out who the culprit was? Giving examples, say how the culprit managed to prevent anyone from suspecting him.
Answer: Everyone was surprised to find who the culprit was because no one could imagine it even that Tinkori Babu could send the threatening letter. Everyone believed that Tinkori Babu didn’t have any motive for this. Besides his modest outlook helps in stupefying others very easily. The culprit, Tinkori Babu managed to prevent anyone from suspecting him very aptly by diverting their minds towards others. Firstly, Tinkori Babu told Feluda, the detective, that Mr. Ghoshal, a crook, could be the culprit as he had a motive for this. Eventually, it was disclosed that Rajen Babu’s relation with his son was not well enough and Dr. Mitra was having a financial crisis. So Feluda suspected them as the culprits and Tinkori Babu strengthened his doubt by talking against each of them. When he left Darjeeling, he pretended in such a way that no one could suspect him. In this way Tinkori Babu’s innocent outlook stupefied all.
Question 5: Would you agree that Feluda is a good detective? Give reason in support of your answer.
Answer: Yes, Feluda is a good detective. Feluda’s smartness, presence of mind, keen observance, self-driven personality fit suitably to the characteristics of a good detective. In the very beginning of his investigation, he made a quick list of the suspects and examined all. He discovered himself, that Rajen Babu’s son, Prabir had reached to Darjeeling recently and their relationship was not well. He found the long mark of mud on Dr. Mitra’s jacket and got sure that he went out last night. In the climax of the story, he identified the culprit, Tinkori Babu only from the smell of cheroot’s smoke on the mask. All these explicitly reveals that Feluda is indeed a good problem solver and a great detective.
