The poem 'Maps' was written by Dorothy Brown Thompson, an American writer. The poet says that maps are not only diagrams on a paper describing physical features, they are also means of exciting to seek adventure through travel or at least dreams of visiting exotic places even if we are unable to visit them. Although, maps look small in scale yet they store is too large. Thus, the poet signifies the mighty information stored in the maps.

Map help the ships to sail to far off places guided by the stars leading them to the land that sell exotic things.

Maps direct the ship away from dangerous icebergs in the polar region and enable flights through areas where strong winds blows.

There are different kinds of map, maps that provide information to train travelers, road maps that help riders to move from one place to another. Some maps also tell us about the weather of any region.

The poet compares map to magic wands because of their power to transport to strange lands is in our imagination land is in our imagination, as if by magic (by just studying these maps).

Thus the poet beautifully paints a bright picture of different things and scenes that maps can bring to our mind and gives us a message that things which look simple and humble from the surface like a map can be powerful and exciting if perceived in deeper sense.
