Gul Mohar English Poem - The Mother Bird
Writer of the poem - Walter de la Mare
Summary
Walter de la Mare was a British poet, short story writer and novelist. In the Mother Bird, de la mare captures a common scene in nature and imagines the range of emotions the bird must be feeling.
The Mother Bird observes a human peering through the leaves at her nest. The moment the bird sees the poet, she looks at him with pleading eyes (Requesting him) not to disturb her or harm the bridling.
The speaker thought that the bird was meek because she was looking at her nest alone. At the same time, he thought that the bird was brave because she was guarding her nest all by herself and did not fly away when she saw the intruder. The speaker could feel the bird heart beating nervously due to fear.
The bird grew bolder and opened her sharp beak to let out a cry, to drive him and defend her eggs/chicks as he posed a threat to her offspring. The sharp warning sound was like a desperate, fierce and a vivid cry that seem to express a shout of courage mingled with joy at being successful in scaring the intruder.
The speaker admired the mother bird and moved away quickly as he did not want to scare the bird by intruding into its territory. He felt foolish by being caught unawares.
The mother bird unconditional and boundless love is depicted in this poem in protecting the young ones. The poet appreciates the mother love in nature that is profound, brave and extraordinary courage with which it stands against the predator( though not mighty in her size).
