What is a Dialogue Writing?A dialogue is a conversation between two or more people.
Rules for Dialogue Writing
• There must be continuity in the ideas of the dialogue.
• The right punctuation should be used to express the mood and tone of the dialogue.
• A dialogue should be written with reference to a given situation.
• It should be concise, relevant and should sound interesting and natural.
• A good dialogue has a proper start and proper ending.
• Use appropriate language
• Sentences should be short and simple
• Make use of the contractions such as don’t, can’t, wasn’t, couldn’t, shouldn’t etc
• And interjections like oh! , Ah! , Alas! etc., and use of um…er… to make the
• Dialogue seems natural and conversational.
• Dialogues could be formal, semi formal or informal depending upon the relationship between the two characters.
• Avoid using slang and impolite words.
Pattern of writing dialogues
• Use simple and easy names for the characters.
• When writing a dialogue use a colon after a name of the character and then write the spoken line.
• Every time a different character speaks, write the dialogue on a fresh line.
• Include the actions, feelings, and expressions in brackets.
Example: A dialogue between a store attendant and a girl discussing about buying a creative gift.
Answer:
Store Attendant: Hello! How can I help you?
Sakshi: Hi, I was looking for a present for my friend. Could you help me select one?
Store Attendant: Yes, of course! What exactly are you looking for?
Sakshi: Well, my friend is a very creative person, so I would like to give her something she could work on.
Store Attendant: Does your friend like ornaments?
Sakshi: Yes, she does. But she prefers to make her own ornaments.
Store Attendant: Well then, I have just the gift you are looking for.
Sakshi: What is it?
Store Attendant: This is an ornament-making set. It contains a colourful range of strings, beads and stones. It also contains hooks and chains. Your friend will love it.
Sakshi: This looks attractive. How much does it cost?
Store Attendant: Only Rs 299. If you’d like, I can show you some handmade card which you could couple with this…
