Gul Mohar English Poem - Wandering Singers
Writer of the story - Sarojini Naidu
Summary
Sarojini Naidu, the poet, freedom fighter and a patriot is known as ‘Nightingale of India’. Her poems describe the beauty, in the people and things around her.
Wandering singers is a simple description of tribal communities in India, the way they live and their outlook towards life.
Their nomadic life as the poet describes is a response to the call of the wind, devoid of any fixed abode. The voice of the wind is the welcoming song to a new place that echoes through the forests and streets.
The universal appeal of the poem is evident in the lines, where the poet considers the band of singers who take the whole world as their home and everyone as their family. (vasudaivika kutumbam)
The lute (musical instrument) echoes from ancient epics and legends, stories about the valor of kings, the beauty of women and about the places that have lost their glory.
Detachment is the key for everlasting spiritual joy. The wandering singers wander in the direction of wind are hence not held back by bonds of love or place. They are happy beings, content travelling forever for generations.
