Fun with Magnets
Magnets are magnificent objects that create an area of magnetic force around them, which is invisible to human eye. This is known as the Magnetic Field. If a magnetic object is inside that area, it gets attracted towards the magnet and moves towards it without any physical contact! Looks like magic… Isn’t it?
What is a magnetic object? Objects that get attracted to a magnet is called the Magnetic Object. And the objects that don’t get attracted to the magnet are called Non-Magnet objects. Example, a piece of wood or paper don’t move if they are kept near the magnet as they don’t have magnetic properties to get attracted while the iron nail or piece of Nickel can be easily attracted to the magnet because they have magnetic properties to be attracted.
When you keep a magnet freely suspended in the air, it would rest in the North-South direction. The end point in the North is called the North Pole while the end point in the South is called the South Pole of the magnet.
Do you know that, like poles (i.e. North-North and South-South) always repel each other while unlike poles (i.e. North-South and South-North) always attract each other.
If you break a magnet into two pieces, it won’t lose its magnetic field but will give you 2 magnets.
Did you know, the Earth behaves like a magnet? That’s because Earth’s core is believed to be a mix of iron and nickel, giving the Earth its own magnetic field.
If a magnet has a strong magnetic field, it can pull objects even underwater.
