Question and Answers
Question 1: Why were the students taking out a procession? How was it an unusual one?
Answer:
The college students were marching in protest to the Collector’s office to hand over a notice asking the Collector to leave the country. The protestors wanted to warn the British to quit India or they will have to face the consequences.
It was an unusual march as the students marched in silence, true to the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent passive resistance. The demonstration of protest was peaceful as they did not want to be imprisoned for violent behavior and they did it with discipline, dignity and restraint.

Question 2: Babu and Manju were a bit disappointed with the way students were marching. What was the reason?
Answer:
Manju and Babu were eagerly waiting to witness their brother taking part in the procession, but the students marched peacefully.
Manju and Babu expected excitement and some activities like raising slogans, lathi-charge and bloodshed as indicative of heroism and patriotism as it was a protest against the British rule. So, they were disappointed with the way the students were marching in silence.

Question 3: What was there in the big newspaper parcel? Why did Mohan bring it secretly?
Answer:
There was a cyclostyling machine in the big newspaper parcel, the possession of which was banned by the British Government. Mohan was involved in the Quit India Movement and so had to work without the knowledge of British Police. As part of their protest, Mohan had to cyclostyle the Mahatma’s speech and distribute it among the protesters. This had to be done in secrecy as no such activities were tolerated by the British.

Question 4: Why had Patil, the sub-inspector come there?  What was the result?
Answer:
The police sub-inspector Patil visits Mohan’s house, whose father has been arrested for participating in the Quit India movement.
Patil, the sub-inspector of police introduces himself as a school friend of Mohan’s father. As a well-wisher, he had come to warn them about the impending police raid at their house. He tells them that the British officers suspect them of having cyclostyling machine to produce copies of Mahatma’s speech.  He assured that he had come to save them from being caught, as a friend of the family and also as an Indian with love for his country and further says that if they handed over that machine to him they may escape from arrest.
Amma believed him and handed over cyclostyling machine to a police officer before the other police arrived.
