Chapter 8 Decimals Exercise 8.3

Question 1: Which is greater?
a) 0.3 or 0.4
b) 0.07 or 0.02
c) 3 or 0.8
d) 0.5 or 0.05
e) 1.23 or 1.2
f) 0.099 or 0.19
g) 1.5 or 1.50
h) 1.431 or 1.490
i) 3.3 or 3.300
j) 5.64 or 5.603
Answer:

a)
0.3 = 3/10
0.4 = 4/10
3/10 < 4/10
Therefore, 0.4 is greater than 0.3.

b)
0.07 = 7/100
0.02 = 2/100
7/100 > 2/100
Therefore, 0.07 is greater than 0.02.

c)
3 = 9/3
0.8 = 8/10
LCM of 3, 10 = 30
= 9/3 × 10/10 = 90/30
= 8/10 × 3/3 = 24/30
90/30  > 24/30
Therefore, 3 is greater than 0.8.

d)
0.5 = 5/10
0.05 = 5/100
LCM of 10, 100 = 100
= 5/10 × 10/10 = 50/100
= 5/100 × 1/1 = 5/100
50/100 > 5/100
Therefore, 0.5 is greater than 0.05.

e)
1.23 = 123/100
1.2 = 12/10
LCM of 10, 100 = 100
= 123/100 × 1/1 = 123/100
= 12/10 × 10/10 = 120/100
123/100 > 120/100
Therefore, 1.23 is greater than 1.2.

f)
0.099 = 99/1000
0.19 = 19/100
LCM of 100, 1000 = 1000
= 99/1000 × 1/1 = 99/1000
= 19/100 × 10/10 = 190/1000
99/1000 < 190/1000
Therefore, 0.19 is greater than 0.099.

g)
1.5 = 15/10
1.50 = 150/100
LCM of 10, 100 = 100
= 15/10 × 10/10 = 150/100
= 150/100 × 1/1 = 150/100
150/100 = 150/100
Therefore, 1.5 and 1.50 are equal.

h)
1.431 = 1431/1000
1.490 = 1490/1000
1431/1000 < 1490/1000
Therefore, 1.490 is greater than 1.431.

i)
3.3 = 33/10
3.300 = 3300/1000
LCM of 10, 1000 = 1000
= 33/10 × 100/100 = 3300/1000
= 3300/1000 × 1/1 = 3300/1000
3300/1000 = 3300/1000
Therefore, 3.3 and 3.300 are equal.

j)
5.64 = 564/100
5.603 = 5603/1000
LCM of 100, 1000 = 1000
= 564/100 × 10/10 = 5640/1000
= 5603/1000 × 1/1 = 5603/1000
5640/1000 > 5603/1000
Therefore, 5.64 is greater than 5.603.

Question 2: Make five more examples and find the greater number from them.
Answer:

a) 5.692 or 5.632
5.692 = 5692/1000
5.632 = 5632/1000
5692/1000 > 5632/1000
Therefore, 5.692 is greater than 5.632.

b) 5.023 or 5.5
5.023 = 5023/1000
5.5 = 55/10
LCM of 10, 1000 = 1000
= 5023/1000 × 1/1 = 5023/1000
= 55/10 × 100/100 = 5500/1000
5023/1000 < 5500/1000
Therefore, 5.5 is greater than 5.023.

c) 1.2 or 1.20
1.2 = 12/10
1.20 = 120/100
LCM of 10, 100 = 100
= 12/10 × 10/10 = 120/100
= 120/100 × 1/1 = 120/100
120/100 = 120/100
Therefore, 1.2 and 1.20 are equal.

d) 5.75 or 8.35
5.75 = 575/100
8.35 = 835/100
575/100 < 835/100
Therefore, 8.35 is greater than 5.75.

e) 0.23 or 0.56
0.23 = 23/100
0.56 = 56/100
23/100 < 56/100
Therefore, 0.56 is greater than 0.23.
