Modal Verbs
A modal is a type of auxiliary (helping) verb that is used to express: ability, possibility, permission or obligation. Normally modal verbs cannot work alone and must work with a main verb.
Modals are different from normal verbs because:
• They don't use an 's' for the third person singular.
• They make questions by inversion ('She can go' becomes 'Can she go?').
• They are followed directly by the infinitive of another verb (without 'to').
