The poem ‘Wind’ by Subramania Bharati (translated by A.K. Ramanujan) is written in free verse. The poem portrays the powerful nature of wind in contrast with human beings. The physical power of wind (nature) is initially well depicted by throwing of books on the shelf, tearing pages, bringing rain, demolishing fragile houses, blowing out weak fires and poking fun of the weaklings.
From a tone of pleading the Wind God the poet finally starts being defensive by stating the precautions one has to take to safeguard oneself from the all-powerful wind.
The wind here is a synonymous to the tough situations and difficulties a person is thrown into in life. According to the poet, a strong physical and mental build-up leads one to a superior quality of life that in return is the key to success. The friendship with the wind is fruitful with these characteristics of human beings.
